Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

The birth of DuVernay's daughter took place on the 24th day of August on the 24th of August, 1972, in Long Beach California. DuVernay began to develop her artistic and creative side in her early years because of her Aunt Denise. The aunt who was a night shift nurse, let her explore art and literature as well as the theater during daylight hours. DuVernay enjoyed the movie West Side Story, which she brought to her. DuVernay visited Selma during the summers and was later inspired to create a film on the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay received her Saint Joseph High School diploma in Lakewood California. DuVernay enrolled at the University of California Los Angeles upon graduation. There she earned diplomas in English as well as African American Studies. DuVernay started broadcasting journalism at the age of a young student. She began her career working as an assistant at CBS News in the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembers being given an assignment to watch the home and looking through the trash of one of members of juries. Her tasks to complete left her unhappy and so, after deciding not to continue in journalism, she shifted to the world of publicity. DuVernay was offered a job straight from college, working as a publicist in the young age of a studio. She was hired in 1999 and established her own business that specialized in public relations, The DuVernay Agency. Besides PR, the agency developed several lifestyle websites including Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful.
